The Farm at South Mountain

LOCATION: South Mountain Village (South) Phoenix Arizona

TYPE OF PROJECT - FOOD/PEOPLE: Urban Agriculture/Aquaponics/Social and Economic development and revitalization, Health and Wellness, STEAM Education.

SUMMARY: A hidden treasure and one of Arizona’s premier dining venues, The Farm at South Mountain located at 6106 S 32nd St, Phoenix, AZ 85042 is a combination kitchen, cafe, artist studio, and working farm. It is also a foremost morning dining spots in Phoenix with the Morning Glory Cafe and a 4 Star evening dining experience with the Quiessence restaurant.

As part of their ongoing Sustainability project, NxT Horizon was recently requested to work with the Farm on an event with the Arizona State University’s EPICS program. The Engineering Projects in Community Service program (EPICS) is a national award-winning social entrepreneurship program. Teams design, build and deploy systems to solve engineering-based problems for charities, schools and other not-for-profit organizations. Our challenge was to teach them the basics of aquaponics within one class period to help them meet the class criteria. Our solution was to have them build one of our revolutionary 4-hour farms aquaponic systems (book available soon). So on the warm Arizona fall morning of October 14th 2016, the class came out and in only 2 hours and 30 minutes were to build a complete Self Contained Aquaponic unit (S-CAp). The Farm even made a video about the event. To watch it please click here.

We are looking forward to the innovations the students come up with. In the mean time the system has gone through cycling and is now beginning to grow plants and fish. As soon as some construction work is done, we hope be open to public display.  Our great thanks to the Farm at South Mountain for sponsoring this extremely worthwhile activity.
